The Legion of Maria Church has firmly distanced itself from the Melkio St. Joseph Mission of Messiah in Africa Church, which has faced public criticism for its controversial practices. Speaking from the church’s headquarters in God Kweru, Migori, Pope Lawrence Ochieng reiterated that the Legion of Maria is a registered institution adhering to moral and societal values.
He clarified that the church encourages formal education and medical care, dismissing any notion that they promote harmful doctrines. While acknowledging similarities in attire and references between the two groups, he emphasized that they share no beliefs or practices.
Church leaders, including Cardinal Chamalengo Ongao and resident priest Moses Ochieng, reinforced that the Legion of Maria’s teachings are distinct and well-defined. They also urged Christians to be cautious of leaders who advocate harmful or questionable practices.
These remarks follow the rescue of 57 ailing individuals by police from the Melkio St. Joseph Mission church in Rongo. The church has been accused of cult-like practices, and two members reportedly died after declining medical treatment. Investigations are ongoing, with the rescued individuals remaining in custody for further inquiries.
