President William Ruto has nominated former Trade Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano to become Kenya’s first female Attorney General. Miano is set to replace Justin Muturi, who served as the seventh AG since the country’s independence.

In her new role, Miano will be responsible for formulating legal policies and ensuring the proper administration of Kenya’s legal system. Prior to her nomination, Miano held the position of Trade CS following a reshuffle in October 2023, and previously served as the Cabinet Secretary for the East African Community, where she focused on regional development and enhancement.
Miano’s impressive career includes her tenure as the first female Managing Director and CEO of the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), where she served for five years. She has over three decades of experience in the energy sector and is widely recognized as a business leader and public servant.
In addition to her public service roles, Miano founded the Pink Energy forum to address gender issues in the energy sector. She has been appointed to prestigious positions such as a council member of the World Bank Group’s Advisory Council on Gender and Development. Miano’s accolades include being named Chairperson of the Year by Women on Boards in 2021, receiving the Company Secretary of the Year award in the 2010 Champions of Governance Awards, and being honored with the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya (OGW) and Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear.
Miano holds a Bachelor of Law (LLB) Degree, a Diploma in Law, and post-graduate studies in Comparative Law. She is a member of the Law Society of Kenya and has served on the Finance Committee of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK).
