Residents across Nairobi reported experiencing seismic movements on Tuesday night, causing widespread concern about potential structural damage and safety risks. The tremors were felt in multiple areas, including Ruaka, Lower Kabete, and Kangemi, with aftershocks continuing to be reported.
Volcano Discovery, a website that monitors seismic activity, noted that details about the quake’s magnitude and depth were still pending. The first reports of the tremor came in around 8:31 pm. “If confirmed, we can expect more accurate data to emerge in the next few minutes. The location, magnitude, and time mentioned are indicative, based on our best-fit seismic model,” stated the website. “They are temporary until our AllQuakes monitoring service receives more exact scientific data from a national or international seismological agency. Check back here shortly and stay safe.”
Google provided preliminary information, indicating that the tremor originated 38 kilometers away from Nairobi and measured a magnitude of 4.2.
The California Earthquake Authority describes a magnitude IV earthquake as moderate. Such quakes are typically felt indoors by many people and outdoors by a few during the day. At night, some may be awakened by the shaking. “Dishes, windows, doors disturbed; walls make cracking sound. Sensation like heavy truck striking building. Standing motor cars rocked noticeably,” explains the authority.
Volcano Discovery added that since 2022, Kenya has experienced three earthquakes with magnitudes above 4 and up to 5.0.
As the situation develops, residents are advised to stay alert and follow safety protocols to minimize risks. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available from seismological agencies.
