A man was arraigned in court on Monday over accusations of publishing “grossly offensive” content on Facebook, which allegedly harmed the reputation of former Nairobi Governor, Evans Kidero.
Bonface Mondi Nyangla, who operates a Facebook account under the name “Omondi Nyangla,” is accused of intentionally posting defamatory remarks targeting Kidero on April 20, 2025. The content, written in the Luo language, allegedly contained statements that were highly offensive and damaging to the former county boss’s public image.
According to the charge sheet, the Facebook posts were deemed “grossly offensive” and have had a “detrimental” effect on Kidero’s reputation, leading to the legal action. The court heard that Nyangla’s social media post had a significant negative impact, potentially influencing public opinion of the former governor.
Nyangla was released on a cash bail of Ksh. 400,000, pending further legal proceedings. The case has sparked discussions on the responsibility of individuals in managing their online presence and the legal implications of defamatory content shared on social media platforms.
The court proceedings will continue as the case unfolds, with the public closely watching the outcome, as it could set a precedent for similar future cases involving social media defamation.
