Lamu Elders Condemn Deputy President’s Remarks Against NIS Director, Call for Unity Among Leaders

A group of Lamu elders on Friday condemned Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over his recent remarks against NIS Director Noordin Haji. The group, led by Mohammed Madhbuti, addressed the media, stating that the attack on Haji was unwarranted.

The elders emphasized their support for Haji, whom they referred to as their son, and expressed confidence in his work. “As Lamu and Muslim elders, we cannot stand by and watch as Gachagua, the second in command and who should show leadership, tears down Noordin,” Madhbuti said in a statement on behalf of the elders. “Why he settled on Noordin and left other security operators remains a puzzle.”

The elders stressed the need for unity in government, warning that disunity among leaders could jeopardize national security. “Discord among leaders is detrimental, and they should speak with one voice to effectively address the problem at hand,” Madhbuti said. “There is a pressing issue at hand which demands unity among our leaders.”

They also highlighted the importance of consistent messaging from leaders to avoid confusing the public and undermining confidence in addressing critical issues. “And it’s not just about the present; our younger generations look to these leaders for guidance and inspiration,” Madhbuti added. “Consistent and unified messaging from our leaders is essential to provide clarity and assurance to our youth, who are shaping our future.”

The elders demanded an apology from Gachagua for his remarks and expressed their support for the country’s Gen Z, encouraging them to express themselves peacefully. “We as Lamu elders encourage the younger generation to voice their opinions and participate in decisions that affect them, as we believe that their voice is crucial for their development and for fostering a healthy democratic society,” Madhbuti said.

In a message of condolence, Madhbuti added, “To the parents, brothers, and sisters who lost their loved ones, we say inna lilahi wainna illehi rajiun. May Allah rest their soul in peace and grant patience during this difficult time.”
