Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome Resigns, Deputy-IG Douglas Kanja to Serve as Acting IG

In a significant development, Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome has resigned from his position. The announcement was made on July 12, 2024, with Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, Douglas Kanja, stepping in as the acting Inspector General.

In an official statement, the President’s office confirmed the resignation. “His Excellency Hon. William Samoei Ruto, PhD, CGH, President and Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces, has on this 12th day of July, 2024, accepted the resignation of Eng. Japheth N. Koome, MGH, as the Inspector General of the National Police Service.”

The reasons behind Koome’s resignation have not yet been disclosed. As the acting Inspector General, Douglas Kanja will be tasked with maintaining stability and continuity within the National Police Service during this transitional period.
