Transport along the Ahero-Kisumu highway was brought to a halt on Tuesday morning as Gen Z protesters barricaded Ahero bridge, lighting bonfires that rendered the road impassable.
The protest caused significant disruptions, stranding numerous vehicles and passengers, including a vehicle transporting The Star newspapers. One passenger, Joseph Otieno, reported being stuck at Ahero since 6 am.
Businesses in the area were also forced to close, with traders fearing potential looting and destruction of property amidst the unrest.
Despite the chilly weather, the protesters clashed with police officers from Ahero Police Station, prompting the need for reinforcement from Kisumu. The police deployed teargas canisters to disperse the demonstrators, leading to running battles between the two groups.
The road has since been cleared, but the incident highlights the ongoing tension and disruption caused by the protests.
