Back to The Streets ; A Setback for Kenyan  Higher Education As Lecturers Announce Resumption of Nationwide Strike

In a shocking turn of events, the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) has announced a nationwide strike, set to commence at midnight tonight. This comes just weeks after the union had reached a tentative agreement with the government to end a previous strike that had paralysed universities across the country. The union had issued a seven day strike notice which expires today.

The union cites disagreement with the government on the return-to-work formula signed on 26th September 2024. The lecturers are dissatisfied with the implementation of the previous agreement, which promised to address issues such as salary increments and improved working conditions.

The government is now faced with the daunting task of resolving the impasse and ensuring that universities can resume normal operations. Failure to do so could have far-reaching consequences for the country’s future.

It remains to be seen how long the strike will last and what impact it will have on the academic year. As the situation unfolds, it is crucial for all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and find a lasting solution to the ongoing crisis.
