President Ruto Announces New Cabinet Secretaries Amid Ongoing Protests

President William Ruto has nominated the first batch of Cabinet Secretaries in a landmark announcement on July 11, 2024, following weeks of youth-led anti-government protests. The nominations, revealed during a press address at State House on Friday, aim to restore peace and stability in the country through cross-political consultations.

Among the 11 nominations, six previously dismissed Cabinet Secretaries have been reinstated in different ministries, with only Prof. Kithure Kindiki and Aden Duale retaining their former positions. The nominated Cabinet Secretaries and their designations are as follows:

  • Ministry of the Interior and National Administration: Prof. Kithure Kindiki
  • Ministry of Health: Dr. Debra Mulonga Barasa
  • Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development: Alice Wahome
  • Ministry of Education: Julius Migosi Ogamba
  • Ministry of Defence: Aden Barre Duale
  • Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development: Dr. Andrew Mwihia Karanja
  • Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry: Roselinda Soipan Tuiya
  • Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation: Eric Muriithi Muuga
  • Ministry of Roads and Transport: Davis Chirchir
  • Ministry of Information, Communication and the Digital Economy: Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u
  • Attorney-General: Rebecca Miano

President Ruto emphasized that these nominations followed extensive consultations and aimed to foster national unity. He also noted that further consultations are ongoing to finalize the remaining Cabinet appointments.

“I am continuing to undertake consultations across the political divide on the balance of the Cabinet that I will appoint shortly. The consultations are at an advanced stage and internal processes in various sectors are underway to facilitate my appointment of the balance of this Cabinet,” said the President.

He also promised to issue a detailed roadmap next week outlining the new Cabinet’s assignments, with specific timelines and deliverables to harness the nation’s potential and drive Kenya to greatness.
