Central Turkana MP Apologizes for Support of Controversial Finance Bill 2024

Central Turkana MP Joseph Namuar has issued an apology to his constituents for voting in favor of the now-withdrawn Finance Bill 2024.

Namuar, a staunch affiliate of the United Democratic Party (UDA), acknowledged President William Ruto’s decision to decline signing the Bill into law, which has opened avenues for dialogue.

“I laud him for the leadership he has exhibited today to show Kenyans that he can listen to their views. If there is a way we did wrong for those of us who voted YES, we ask for your forgiveness,” Namuar stated. He also extended his apologies on behalf of President Ruto, saying, “As your footsoldiers, we ask for forgiveness on your behalf.”

President Ruto’s decision came after escalating nationwide protests, including a breach of Parliament in the capital, Nairobi. The controversial Bill, which was passed by lawmakers with a vote of 195 to 106, was met with violent protests and tragic fatalities among demonstrators.

Protesters argue that the proposed taxes in the Bill would worsen the cost of living. In response, they have threatened to march to State House today, Thursday, June 27, to voice their dissatisfaction with President Ruto’s administration.

In a bid to maintain order, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have deployed armed trucks and tanks into Nairobi. Major roads leading to State House have been heavily barricaded to support police efforts in ensuring calm.
