Isiolo Governor Faces Arrest Over Senate Defiance

In a dramatic turn of events, the Senate Standing Committee on Health has requested the Inspector General of Police and the Director of Public Prosecution to arrest and prosecute Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo for contempt. The committee’s decision came after Guyo repeatedly failed to honor invitations and summons to appear before the committee to address concerns related to healthcare services and the morgue at the Isiolo County Referral Hospital.

The committee, led by chairperson Jackson Mandago, expressed frustration over Guyo’s failure to respond to the issues raised, which have been pending for more than six months. “We are left with no other choice but to ask the IG and the DPP to arrest and prosecute the Governor,” Mandago stated, emphasizing that Guyo had exhibited the highest contempt for the Senate and the committee.

The move is backed by the Parliamentary Powers and Privileges Act, which allows Parliament or its committees to order the arrest of individuals who fail to honor summons. If found guilty, Guyo could face a fine of up to KSh 500,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both.

Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo, who had sought a statement on the status of the Isiolo County Hospital, expressed her frustration with the lack of oversight in the county. “I will recommend that the budget going to Isiolo should be stopped after all it is not helping the people of Isiolo. We are suffering. I will bring a statement on the floor of the House to stop the budget until they respect the Senate,” she said.

However, Governor Guyo has defended his position, stating that he is willing to account for his administration’s actions to the relevant oversight agencies. “I will not succumb to intimidation and blackmail of one senator,” he said, challenging Senator Dullo to petition the appropriate authorities if she believes there is malpractice.

The situation has escalated tensions between the Senate and the Isiolo County Government, with potential implications for the allocation of resources and the delivery of essential services to the people of Isiolo.

As the standoff continues, all eyes are on the Inspector General of Police and the Director of Public Prosecution to determine the next steps in this high-stakes political drama.
