Making Strides for Change: WAYA’s Walk Against Drugs and Tree Planting Initiative

When we co-founded the Wangû Ward Youth Association (WAYA), it was fueled by a simple but powerful dream: to create a platform where young people could come together, inspire each other, and transform our community. Today, standing as one of its pioneers, I am filled with pride as I witness the incredible impact we are making.

Today marked another milestone in our journey. Together with fellow passionate youth, we organized a Drug free community Walk under the theme “Say No to Drugs” We set off from Mukangu Shopping Centre, passed through Kahuhia , Karuri ,Gathinja, Kahuti , and made our way to Koimbi, a 10-kilometer journey that was not just about the distance, but about the message we carried in every step.

The parents openly expressed deep concerns about the growing problem of drug and substance abuse within our villages, noting the negative effects it continues to have on families, young people, and the community as a whole. They emphasized the urgent need for collective action to curb this menace before it causes further harm. At the same time, they warmly applauded the commendable efforts being made by the youth, who have taken a proactive stand against drug abuse through the walks awareness campaign. The parents acknowledged that the youth’s involvement is a promising sign of hope and change for the future of the young Generation.

Along the way, we took time to visit the Wangû Reformed Youths CBO Tree Nursery, an initiative close to our hearts, where young people are leading the way in environmental conservation. We were honored to have the former Wangû Ward Assistant County Commissioner (ACC), Mr. James Nandi, join us for the inspection of the project.

We wrapped up the walk with a vibrant and heartwarming visit to Koimbi Children’s Home, marking the perfect end to an inspiring day. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the children, whose smiles and excitement instantly lit up the atmosphere. We spent meaningful time together, engaging in fun activities, sharing stories, and encouraging them with words of hope and motivation.

Afterward, we all gathered for a meal, enjoying delicious food in a spirit of togetherness and celebration. The joy of sitting side by side, eating, laughing, and connecting with the children made the moment even more special. To crown the day, we presented the children with a variety of thoughtful gifts, bringing even more smiles and happiness.

As I spoke to the young people gathered, I emphasized the importance of joining movements like the Muranga Young Professionals (MYP), where we are looking forward to working closely with both the county and national government. Through MYP, we hope to lobby for more opportunities that empower and uplift our youth.

Murang’a Young Professionals (MYP) is an exciting new initiative designed to empower and connect young individuals across Murang’a County, offering mentorship, career development, and leadership opportunities. By bringing together established professionals and ambitious youth, MYP creates a vibrant, inclusive network focused on personal growth and community transformation. Guided by the motto “Elevate Your Career, Impact Your Community,” joining MYP offers a unique chance to gain valuable skills, expand your network, and contribute to shaping a prosperous future for Murang’a.

Today was a reminder that real change starts with small steps — and when we walk together, those steps turn into a powerful movement. Here’s to a future full of hope, action, and unity!
